RWA11 – Taking New York by Storm

Two days into a four-day writers conference, I sit high up in a hotel in the middle of Times Square 3 minutes to midnight and all I can think about are the characters in my head. These characters are so new to me that I do not know them yet. They came to me during the last session of the day. That is why these conferences are vital to keeping a writer motivated. There are two more days of non-stop education, motivation, career guidance, and the best part, support from old and new friends. I met a fellow writer from Sydney, Australia today. How cool is that? Within an hour, I had made a connection and a new friend with someone from half way around the world who understands the world of a writer.

Writing is a solitary occupation and it is through such conferences you have an opportunity to get together and find comfort from others who understand your world often referred to as a hobby by friends and family.

The clock is ticking and I want to flesh out my characters but I dare not oversleep and miss out on the morning’s events. One last peek through the curtains to take in the bright lights of Times Square and people gracing the streets as if it were early morning. Good night New York, tomorrow is another day.
